And since there is no restriction for the letter width, the characters are expanded to the maximum, to create a wide, optimistic look, with lines that will follow generous curves and quirky serifs. The only characters that are somehow “constrained” are the fractions, displayed vertically, not really saving space, used more as a reference for the type design of the early twentieth century. Fractions created with the OpenType Features otherwise will create the common, modern format, based on the slanted fraction character.
The font is not necessarily meant to be a comeback or a nostalgic work, it is a modern interpretation of a classic. This way contemporary lines and constructions can be included easier, without creating an anachronistic design. Because of that a cloth or a paper texture is not a priority, in this case the font is more design than art. To make it as genuine as possible, a rough look would probably need a typewriter sound attached to it.
Like many serif fonts, Type Machine relies on heavy kerning, so it’s recommended to use it in a software that supports this feature.
